Professional Baseball Experience
1985-91 California Angels (1st Round Draft Pick January Draft)
1991-92 Baltimore Orioles
1992-93 Milwaukee Brewers
Born and raised in Austin,Texas...
I graduated from Travis High School (1982) and attended Blinn Jr. College on a baseball scholarship majoring in general studies. After 2 years at Blinn, I was fortunate and blessed to be drafted by the California Angels (1984) and proceeded to take advantage of the opportunity. I played for the Angels in their minor League system for 6 years attending Big League Camp in 1986 after the 1986 Instructional League in Mesa, Arizona. In 1991, I became a free agent and was traded to the Baltimore Orioles where I had the opportunity to play with Cal Ripken Jr. as well as many other Oriole stars. I finished my career with the Milwaukee Brewers in the 93 season. I then attended Southwest Texas State University and then The University of Texas to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. I am now working on my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership at the University of Texas at Tyler. I am adamant in my effort to limit arm injuries as well as develop the mental focus on baseball skills for today’s baseball player. This will in turn extend their baseball experience as well as reach their personal goals.
Coach Martinez's Goals:
Another Native Texan....
Jake grew up in West Lake Hills,TX and was a multi-sport athlete even in high school, where he played baseball and soccer. He chose to continue with soccer in college, earning an athletic scholarship to play NCAA Division 1 ball at Saint Louis University in Missouri. After two years in St. Louis, he parlayed his talents to conclude his college soccer career at UNLV, while earning a bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems. After a stint in Vegas, he came back to Texas to play semi-professional soccer for the Austin Lightning (now Austin Aztex). Jake has hung up his boots and now works as a Senior Account Executive for a major Technology Company in Austin. Throughout his baseball and soccer careers, he's had some outstanding mentors and coaches, and now has spent many years coaching and studying the game of baseball. He recently coached the 11U Elite Team for Dripping Springs and when he's not providing 1x1 instruction, he is active in the DSYSA Elite Baseball Program. Jake's goal is to help each child perform to their best potential, creating confident kids on the diamond and in the classroom.
Coach Jake's Philosophy:
We acknowledge there's a prevalent myth in today's baseball & softball societies that encourages our kids to jump into Select programs too early. We're all too familiar with the tremendous pressure put on the kids and parents to play year round and at high impact tournaments, resulting in early injury or career burnout. At DSTX, we aim to help kids (and parents) create a balanced approach to put them in the driver's seat for long-term success. We aspire to instill in our kids:
